California has more problems with butane hash oil explosions than any other state. According to the DEA, the first report of an illicit hash-oil lab came in 2005, in Oakland, California.

Between 2014 and 2016, the illegal labs exploded an average of one time every week.  Due to the extensive damage caused by BHO, the state legislature passed laws making the manufacture of these products illegally a felony, and an aggravated felony if done nor children.   Law enforcement has become better are finding the labs and dismantling them before an explosion can occur.
