Whoa Dude! New book on understanding weed

Think on these things before getting too deep into smoking Weed*    * Or what the science of marijuana is telling us about the harmful effects of marijuana for you, your friends, or your kids.

It is a long title for a 222 page VERY readable book.

I have read dozens of books about marijuana – the drug and the industry, mental health harms caused by marijuana, substance use disorders and treatment and recovery.  Additionally, I’ve read books about the reasons so many feel commercializing and normalizing marijuana is acceptable public policy.

Many of the books left me feeling buried and over my head.

I’m not a scientist or medical professional. I’m a retired accountant/financial advisor and a Mom forever grieving the loss of my son Andy to marijuana-induced suicide.

Book Review: Victoria’s Voice

One of the wealthiest families in America was struck a blow in 2015 by the tragic overdose death of their eldest daughter, Victoria.

After Victoria’s funeral, the discovery of her diary opened up her inner life to them. For the first time, they realized how much their daughter was fighting against suicidal urges, in addition to suffering from self-esteem issues. They also saw in graphic drawings and raw, emotional words the grip drugs had on their cherished girl.

New book has up-to-date facts about cannabis as Medicine

A distinguished group of doctors, scientists and academics present the latest research in Cannabis in Medicine: An Evidence-Based Approach.  Dr. Kenneth Finn, a professional advisor to Parents Opposed to Pot, edited the book and Springer, a prominent medical textbook company, published the book in July, 2020.   

In recent years, marijuana has grown exponentially stronger and the science on its effects has grown more robust. Between 2011 and 2019, 15,269 marijuana-related manuscripts were published in biomedical literature.  The notions that the Schedule I designation of marijuana prevents research, and that we need a MORE Act to allow research, are false.  As the drug grows more potent, its damaging effects become more obvious, too. Marijuana…Know The Truth Campaign

Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon and the truth. “Marijuana…Know the Truth” is a new campaign of the Drug Free America Foundation, Inc.  Its producers designed two videos to educate the public about the real consequences of marijuana use. The initiative begins with public service announcements (PSAs) that examine the connection between marijuana use and opioid abuse and overdose. A thirty-second commercial begins this week and will run in select movie theaters throughout the country for 10 weeks. The video features a mother, Karen Bailey, who tells the story of how her son started smoking marijuana in middle school. His marijuana use turned into an opioid addiction that ultimately took his life.

Drug Free America targets the commercial to cities and states that have been hard hit by drugs and overdose deaths. By a long shot, drugs cause far more accidental deaths in the US than both guns and traffic incidents. To drive home that point, the campaign will run digital PSAs, too. The theater PSAs appear in CO, CT, DC, FL, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MT, NH, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA, and WV. For theater information, contact Amy at [email protected].
